Ways to troubleshoot the issue of undefined navigator / window / document in Nuxt

I encountered an issue while trying to extract UserAgent and Retina information within a Nuxt application. The error message I'm receiving states that navigator/window is undefined. How can I retrieve this information within my Nuxt application?

const userAgent = navigator.userAgent.toLowerCase()
const isAndroid = userAgent.includes('android')
isRetina() {
  let mediaQuery
  if (typeof window !== 'undefined' && window !== null) {
    mediaQuery =
      '(-webkit-min-device-pixel-ratio: 1.25), (min--moz-device-pixel-ratio: 1.25), (-o-min-device-pixel-ratio: 5/4), (min-resolution: 1.25dppx)'
    if (window.devicePixelRatio > 1.25) {
      return true
    }
    if (window.matchMedia && window.matchMedia(mediaQuery).matches) {
      return true
    }
  }
  return false
}

Here is the solution to resolve these issues:

  • navigator is undefined
  • window is undefined
  • document is not defined

Below is an example demonstrating how to properly structure your JavaScript logic:

<script>
import { jsPlumb } from 'jsplumb' // client-side library only, no SSR support

export default {
  mounted() {
    if (process.client) {
      // insert your JS code here like >> jsPlumb.ready(function () {})
    }
  },
}
</script>

Refer to this link for more details: https://nuxtjs.org/docs/2.x/internals-glossary/context

Note: Combining mounted with process.client may seem redundant since mounted runs exclusively on the client side.

If you want a component to be rendered solely on the client side, consider enclosing it within <client-only> tags:

<template>
  <div>
    <p>This content will render both on server and client side.</p>

    <client-only>
      <p>This content will only render on the client side.</p>
    </client-only>
  <div>
</template>

For detailed information, visit: https://nuxtjs.org/docs/2.x/features/nuxt-components/#the-client-only-component

Note: It's important to understand that the client-only tag skips rendering but does not prevent execution, as discussed here.

Certain packages do not support Server-Side Rendering (SSR) when imported. In such cases, you can:

  • Use a conditional statement with a dynamic import (if the library is intended for late use)
  • Import directly like demonstrated below (e.g., loading a component such as vue-editor)
export default {
  components: {
    [process.client && 'VueEditor']: () => import('vue2-editor'),
  }
}
