Is it possible to use a webcam to scan a QR code directly into a webpage?

Is it possible to enable users to input data on a webpage using QR code scanning?

I'm unsure if there is a tool that can be integrated into the page or paired with a library to make this happen, or if I need to consider an external solution beyond the browser?

If the solution is platform-specific, my preference is for something compatible with Windows. Ultimately, I would like it to work seamlessly across PCs and tablets.

Although there isn't a standardized way to handle webcams in javascript, it can be done with flash after the user grants access.

I searched for qr code flash and discovered this webpage:

You can also look into qr code actionscript if you need a reader library.

Answer №2

When it comes to controlling webcams, the options are limited due to security and privacy concerns. Web code operates on a web server while Javascript runs on the client side, but controlling a client's webcam through Javascript is not feasible.

One option is HTML5, which offers new standards for webcam control, however it is still relatively new with limited browser support (mainly Google Chrome and Opera).

Another choice is Silverlight, specifically with version 4 allowing access to a user's webcam. While easy to use, Silverlight is not as widely used as our final option:

Adobe Flash. With Flash, you can easily access a user's webcam and benefit from its widespread availability across various computers.

These three options provide different paths for webcam control, so choose wisely and good luck!
