Why isn't my script responding to mouse events like mouseenter, mouseover, or any other mouse event?

const element = document.getElementById("box");
element.addEventListener("mouseenter", handleMouse);

function handleMouse(event) {
  console.log("Event type: " + event.type);
}

Answer №1

Have you considered how you are executing the script? Are you attaching the event listener within $(document).ready() or in a different manner? Additionally, can you provide insight into what your HTML structure looks like for the box element?

After testing your code exactly as written, I was able to run it without any issues.

let box = document.getElementById("box");

box.addEventListener("mouseenter", mouseFunc);

function mouseFunc(e) {
  console.log("event " + e.type);
}
<div id="box">
 test box
</div>

It's possible that you may be incorrectly using box as a class instead of an id. If this is the case, you should use getElementsByClassName and then attach the event listener to each individual element

let box = document.getElementsByClassName("box");

for (var i = 0; i < box.length; i++) {
    box[i].addEventListener("mouseenter", mouseFunc);
};
