What is the process for converting several files into a base64 string?

I have a component set up like this:

<input type="file" multiple @change="toBase64Handler($event)">

<script>
 data() {
  return {
     files: [],
   }
 },
 methods: {
  tobase64Handler(event) {
   // implementation
  }
 }
</script>

I want to convert all the selected files into base64 strings, similar to the following structure:

files: [
  {
   selectedFile: 'ajsdgfauywdljasvdajsgvdasdo1u2ydfouayvsdlj2vo8ayasd...'
  },
  {
   selectedFile: 'askdhgoiydvywdljasvdajsgvdasdo1u2ydfoakjgsfdjagswsd...'
  },
  {
   selectedFile: '12edashjvlsljasvdajsgvdasdo1u2ydfouayvsdlj2vo8ayfsd...'
  },
]

How can I accomplish this task?

If you want to convert files to base64 format in JavaScript, you can utilize the following approach:

  convertToBase64(file) {
    return new Promise((resolve, reject) => {
      const reader = new FileReader();
      reader.readAsDataURL(file);
      reader.onload = () => resolve(reader.result);
      reader.onerror = error => reject(error);
    });
  };

  async handleFileConversion(files) {
    const filePromises = [];
    files.forEach(file => {
      filePromises.push(this.convertToBase64(file));
    });
    const base64Files = await Promise.all(filePromises);
    const mappedResults = base64Files.map((base64Data) => ({ convertedFile: base64Data }));
    return mappedResults;
  }

If you're looking to convert files into a string, you can use JSON.stringify(files). More information on this method can be found here. To revert the string back to its original form, whether it's an array, object, or value, you'd use JSON.parse(files). More details on this process are available here.

UPDATE: It seems I made a mistake as JSON.stringify/parse may not be suitable for working with files (thank you @patrick evans for pointing that out). A better solution is suggested in this answer by @ahmed hamdy.
