What is the best approach to creating unit tests for three.js?

Is it possible to write unit tests for JavaScript files in the three.js library? I have a 3D viewer with a camera, renderer, loader, and more. How can I go about testing this? Are there resources available to help me with this process?

Answer №1

I have discovered a method to conduct unit testing for webgl/threejs in a headless manner without the need for image comparison.

https://github.com/AmitTeli/webgl-three-test

Here is the approach I took:

  1. Global variables such as scene, renderer, and camera were moved to index.html.
  2. These variables are initialized upon loading of the page. For example, in a reactjs scenario, they are initialized in the componentDidMount() function of the root component. Other functions can then utilize this context. (You can validate this setup by running yarn start)
  3. During unit testing, these variables are initialized in setupTest.js. Additional dev dependencies of headless webgl - gl and canvas will be required.
  4. With this configuration, tests can be executed in files like App.test.js. You can verify this by running yarn test

Answer №2

To verify the integrity of the anticipated outcome, you have the option to analyze characteristics or employ a headless browser such as chromium for comparing visual representations between predicted and real images. Resources related to testing WebGL often showcase demonstrations using this method.
