Troubleshooting tips for when JavaScript fails to load

I have encountered an issue with my two websites that are using the same theme. The sites in question are and . Both of them are WP multisite subsites, and are utilizing the exact same child theme with identical template files.

However, I have noticed that the former website is failing to load the necessary javascript, which is causing issues with the masonry layout and mobile menu functionality. I suspect that this problem may have occurred during the domain mapping process, or when I changed the URL structure from something like here-is.com/kentishtowner-new to here-is.com/kentishtowner...

Since I am not well-versed in JavaScript, I am reaching out to see if anyone can provide some guidance on how to troubleshoot and resolve this issue.

I have been up all night dealing with this problem, and it is now 11am - I am going to take a quick nap, but any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

When you open Chrome's console, you will notice

Resource interpreted as Script but transferred with MIME type text/html: "".

Upon further investigation, it was discovered that here-is.com is providing an empty response to that particular request.

It appears that the page is making absolute references to various resources on here-is.com, which functions correctly when accessed through that domain. However, issues arise when accessing it through www.kentishtowner.co.uk. To resolve this issue, you may need to configure the project's base URL to specify its deployment location. Alternatively, using relative links could also solve the problem.

(To view the references, you can use Chrome's developer tools by pressing ctrl+shift+F and searching for here-is.com)

Web browsers come equipped with consoles that detect JavaScript errors. These consoles pinpoint where an error occurred and what type of error it was. By identifying the issue, you can conduct research to find potential solutions.

It's likely that the malfunctioning site is attempting to utilize a script hosted on a different, functional site. In such cases, updating the script paths should resolve the problem.

--edit--

Fortunately, I've never had the need to use Wordpress. Sadly, this means I am unable to offer guidance on locating the .js files or understanding their organization.

My preferred debugging method involves Chrome. Here's how you can assess whether your page can access external scripts:

  1. Focus on the problematic page and press F12 to launch Chrome's developer tools.

  2. Go to the Network tab and hit F5 to refresh the page.

  3. Sort the files by type and look for those labeled as text/javascript, indicating external script files your site is trying to fetch.

  4. Check the status of each file. If it doesn't read 200 OK, your page is unable to access that specific script.

Next, you should pinpoint the designated location for these scripts. Once identified, retrieve the necessary scripts from the functional site and paste them in the appropriate directory of the malfunctioning site.

Best of luck!
