To prevent the background window from being active while the pop-up is open

I have a link on my webpage that triggers a pop-up window, causing the background to turn grey. However, I am still able to click on other links in the background while the pop-up is open. I tried using the code document.getElementById('pagewrapper').disabled=true; to disable the entire background when the pop-up is active, but it doesn't seem to be working as expected.

Below is the code used to open the pop-up window, with the intention of disabling the background:

function popUpText(popUpContents) {
    // Adjust position of the pop-up based on page scrolling
    var containerTop = Position.page($('pagewrapper'))[1];
    $('popup').setStyle({top: ((0-containerTop)+100) + 'px'});
    var popupPageHTML = $(popUpContents).innerHTML;
    var uniquePopupPageHTML = popupPageHTML.replace(/-POPUP_ID_REPLACER-/g,"-");
    $('popup').innerHTML = uniquePopupPageHTML;
    toggleIt('popup');
    $('pagewrapper').setOpacity(.3);
    document.getElementById('pagewrapper').disabled=true;
}

To enhance user experience, consider implementing a popup layout that covers the entire body with a z-index between the body and the popup itself. When the user closes the popup, remember to delete the overlay for a seamless interaction.
