Safari Browser does not currently offer support for MediaRecorder functionality

[Log] Webcam permission error

Error: MediaRecorder is not supported

I am facing an issue while trying to record audio. The Chrome browser allows audio recording without any problem, but Safari is throwing an error.

global.audioStream = await navigator.mediaDevices.getUserMedia({ audio: true });

global.audioChunks = [];

const canRecord = MediaRecorder.isTypeSupported('video/webm; codecs=vp8');

Does anyone have a solution for this?

Answer №1

The MediaRecorder API became compatible with Safari starting from version 14.1, which was released on April 26, 2021.

If you encounter this issue, there are two ways to address it:

  • Notify the user that updating their Safari browser is necessary for this feature to work (simple, but not ideal if support for older Safari versions is required);
  • Alternatively, implement server-side recording by transmitting the media stream through WebRTC to a media server such as Janus, MediaSoup, or GStreamer, where it can be recorded on the server side. This method is more complex, but ensures compatibility with older Safari versions (starting from Safari 11). You will need a media server installed and some form of load balancing for high traffic, but it's the only solution for browsers lacking support for the MediaRecording API.
