Loading Bootstrap accordion content with AJAX only when clicked

Is there a way to load ajax content into an accordion only when it is active? This could help prevent unnecessary data loading. It would be helpful to have a spinner displayed while the content is loading. I've searched online but haven't found a solution yet. Thank you.

Here is an example of a basic accordion:

Give this a shot:

$('#myCollapsiblePanel').on('show.bs.collapse', function(e){
   var itemIdentifier  = $(e.target).attr('id').replace('identifier-prefix-for-panel-collapse','');
   //$(e.target) is referring to the collapsible panel div
   //use the itemIdentifier to fetch relevant data from the server using ajax
   //then you can populate the collapsible panel div with the fetched data
});
