"Exploring interactive 3D graphics with Three.js and Collada

I'm a beginner with Three.JS and I'm attempting to import a simple Sketchup model (a single cube) into Three.JS using the ColladaLoader. Although I am not receiving any errors, nothing is being displayed on the screen:

var renderer = new THREE.WebGLRenderer();
var loader = new THREE.ColladaLoader();
var scene = new THREE.Scene();
var camera = new THREE.Camera();
loader.load('Test.dae', function (result) {
  scene.add(result.scene);
});
camera = new THREE.PerspectiveCamera(35, window.innerWidth / window.innerHeight, 1, 10000 );
camera.position.set(0, 0, 5);
scene.add(camera);
renderer.render(scene,camera);

Could someone identify any immediate mistakes? Appreciate it!

Answer №1

Issue resolved! Although I had defined the renderer, I forgot to attach it to the document. The code below now functions correctly:

var scene = new THREE.Scene();
var camera = new THREE.PerspectiveCamera(100, window.innerWidth / window.innerHeight, 0.1, 1000);
var renderer = new THREE.WebGLRenderer();
renderer.setSize(window.innerWidth, window.innerHeight);
document.body.appendChild(renderer.domElement);
camera.position.set(0, 0, 4);
var loader = new THREE.ColladaLoader();
loader.load("test.dae", function (result) {
    scene.add(result.scene);
});

function render() {
    requestAnimationFrame(render);
    renderer.render(scene, camera);
}
render();

Answer №2

To display the collada model correctly, remember to render the scene after loading it. Here's an example:

loader.load('Test.dae', function (result) {
  scene.add(result.scene);
  renderer.render(scene,camera);
});

In addition:

  • Ensure that the camera is positioned properly to avoid being inside the geometry. To make faces visible from both front and back, adjust the location of the camera or object, or set material.side = THREE.DoubleSide.
  • The scale of the model may need adjusting, so try different camera positions and utilize lookAt() to orient it correctly. Some loaders now offer a scale setting as well.
  • By default, the loader places objects at coordinates 0,0,0 which could affect placement in the scene depending on the camera position. Make sure there are lights in the scene for proper visibility.

Answer №3

    loader.load('example.dae', function colladaLoaded(collada) {

    obj = collada.scene;

    obj.scale.x = obj.scale.y = obj.scale.z = 2;
            obj.updateMatrix();
scene.add(obj);

To ensure proper scaling of the object being added to the collada scene, make sure to include the object and update its matrix after scaling it accordingly.

Answer №4

If you're encountering difficulties, it could be due to certain versions of Internet Explorer blocking the download of local files (such as Test.dae). Consider using Firefox or uploading your code onto a server for testing purposes.
