Achieving synchronization within the 'it' block using Protractor

I am currently experiencing synchronization issues in the 'it' block of my code. The following snippet illustrates the problem:

 it('Some Download Operation',function()
 {
    console.log("before");
    myobj.clickOnDownloadBtn();
    console.log("after download click");
    browser.driver.sleep(5000);
    var enter = browser.actions().sendKeys(protractor.Key.ENTER);
    enter.perform();
    console.log("after enter btn");
});

The output I am receiving is as follows:

before
after download click
after enter btn
//Then the click on PO Object's 'myobj.clickOnDownloadBtn()' operation.

Please advise me on the issue and provide a solution as soon as possible.

Answer №1

To properly add the function, follow this example:

 it('Some Download Operation',function()
 {

    myobj.clickOnDownloadBtn().then (function() {
    console.log("after enter btn");
    console.log("after download click");
    });

    browser.driver.sleep(5000);
    var enter = browser.actions().sendKeys(protractor.Key.ENTER);
    enter.perform().then (function() {
    console.log("after enter btn");
    });

});

Answer №2

Let's delve deeper into why @Emna's solution is beneficial:

Protractor operates entirely in an asynchronous manner, relying on promises instead of executing code from top to bottom in a blocking fashion. The Control Flow mechanism in Protractor serves as a queue for WebDriver promises.

Consider how this applies to your code snippet:

console.log("before");
myobj.clickOnDownloadBtn();
console.log("after download click");
browser.driver.sleep(5000);
var enter = browser.actions().sendKeys(protractor.Key.ENTER);
enter.perform();
console.log("after enter btn");

In this scenario, the synchronous console.log() statements are executed immediately. However, functions like myobj.clickOnDownloadBtn(), browser.driver.sleep(5000), and enter.perform() return promises that get queued in the Control Flow. As a result, you observe the console.log outputs before any actual page interactions take place.
