Why am I unable to utilize an array in this manner in JavaScript, and what is the method for accessing the array using a calculated number?

var nodesXY = ['15% 15%','30% 16%','19% 42%','39% 80%',];
var number  = ["0","1","2","3","4","0","0","0"];

//some loop
    AccesNodes(number[1]);

function AccesNodes(number){
        console.log(number);
        //number = number;
        var firstNode = nodesXY[number];
        console.log(nodesXY[number]);
        console.log(firstNode);
        number++;
        var secondNode = nodesXY[number];
        console.log(nodesXY[number]);
        console.log(secondNode);
        number = number + 4;
        var thirdNode = nodesXY[number];
        console.log(nodesXY[number]);
        console.log(thirdNode);
    }

I don't understand why I'm not getting an undefined when trying to access the "next node" with

var secondNode = nodesXY[number+1];
. How can I make this work correctly? I've looked for alternative solutions without success.

Answer №1

Your number array is made up of strings. JavaScript may not be strict with types, but variables and elements still hold specific data types.

So, when you access number[X], it will return a string. To make it work, consider creating an array of numbers like this: var number = [1,2,3,...], or convert the string to a number using parseInt(number[X]).

For a comprehensive list of data types that can be held in a JavaScript var, check out this page in the MDN JavaScript documentation.

Answer №2

Make sure to populate your number array with numerical values instead of strings

let numbers = [5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30];

Answer №3

The values in your array are currently strings, not numeric values. When you try to add a number to a string like "1" + 1, it will concatenate the two strings resulting in "11" instead of the expected 2. To resolve this issue, consider converting your array elements to numbers by using number = [0,1,...] or using parseInt(number) + 1.
