What should I do to resolve the error message TypeError: _components_firebase_Firebase__WEBPACK_IMPORTED_MODULE_2__.default.auth is not a valid function?

I have implemented Firebase with next.js and organized my files as shown below. However, I am encountering an issue with using the firebase client side SDK during the sign-up process.

Firebase.js is where the firebase app is initialized

import firebase from 'firebase/app'
import 'firebase/auth'
const config = {
    apiKey: process.env.FIREBASE_API_KEY,
    authDomain: process.env.FIREBASE_AUTH_DOMAIN,
    databaseURL: process.env.FIREBASE_DATABASE_URL,
    projectId: process.env.FIREBASE_PROJECT_ID,
    storageBucket: process.env.FIREBASE_STORAGE_BUCKET,
    messagingSenderId: process.env.FIREBASE_MESSAGING_SENDER_ID,
    appId: process.env.FIREBASE_APP_ID,
    measurementId: process.env.FIREBASE_MEASUREMENT_ID
};

export default function initFirebase() {
  if (!firebase.apps.length) {

    firebase.initializeApp(config)
  }
}

The specific function facing issues during the sign up phase is as follows:

import Firebase from "../../components/firebase/Firebase";

    Firebase.auth().createUserWithEmailAndPassword(email, password).catch(function(error) {
                            // Handle Errors here.

                          });

Answer №1

Looks like you forgot to include the auth function from Firebase.js in your export. The error message is simply reminding you that if you don't export it, you won't be able to access it when importing.

If you need to use the auth() function from the global firebase namespace, make sure to export it like this:

export function auth() {
    return firebase.auth();
}

Then you can easily import it into another file and use it like so:

import { auth } from "../../components/firebase/Firebase";
auth().createUserWithEmailAndPassword(...);

It's generally recommended to avoid using default exports and instead name each export individually. You might also consider exporting the entire firebase namespace if you want to expose the full SDK functionalities.

Answer №2

The problem with the Firebase.js module seems to be that the initFirebase function is being exported instead of the firebase itself.

To fix this, consider updating the section below:

if (!firebase.apps.length) {
  firebase.initializeApp(config)
}

export default firebase;

On a side note, I initially encountered a similar issue while working on my own project, which led me to overlook this export problem in your code. It's important to take a step back and not rush to conclusions without thoroughly analyzing the situation. This serves as a reminder for myself to approach problems with patience and attention to detail.
