What mechanism enables the scores on this sports ticker to refresh automatically without relying on ajax calls?

While browsing scores on , I found myself intrigued by the way they update their scores without using ajax calls or iframes.

It's a mystery to me how this functionality is achieved. Can anyone shed some light on how it works?

It appears that the scores are being updated using Flash code. I turned off Flash in my browser and received this notification:

Alternatively, if you prefer to achieve a similar functionality without relying on a Plugin, you can utilize Websockets in JavaScript.

Make sure to review line 1884 in the scoreboard document. The storePlayers method is responsible for organizing that lengthy string into formatted sets of markup needed for the ticker.
