What is the reason behind the quicker search for the median in a 100-item array compared to a 10-item array?

I conducted experiments to verify this, and the results were not entirely as anticipated: http://jsperf.com/value-in-array-or-object

Feel free to run your own tests as well.

Answer №1

Contrary to popular belief, it's actually not quicker. The speed may have seemed faster in your experiments because you used assignment rather than comparison when testing with 50 and 100 items:

if(a100[x] = 'item50'){
    break;
}

The test involving 10 items was done correctly:

if(a10[x] === 'item5'){
    break;
}
