What is the reason behind AngularJS recognizing the $index directive and not the $parent directive?

I have been working on this up until now.

Check out my code here.

I'm trying to access $parent.$index in a directive, is that possible? Can someone explain it to me?

<ul>
   <li ng-repeat="item in lists">
      {{item.name}}
      <ul>
         <li ng-repeat="card in item.cards">
            {{card.name}}
            <div modal-window-card></div>
        </li>
      </ul>
   </li>
</ul>

Answer №1

The ng-repeat creates a unique scope, causing the second ng-repeat to be nested within the first ng-repeat's scope. To access the $index of the first ng-repeat, you can use:

$parent.$index

However, if you are using a directive that creates its own scope, using $parent will only target the second ng-repeat's scope. To access the $index of the first ng-repeat, you can use:

App.directive('modalWindowCard', function(){
  return {
        scope: {

        },
        template:  '{{$parent.$parent.$index}}/{{$parent.$index}}'

  }
})
