What is the process for converting a negative decimal number into hexadecimal format?

hex = Number(-59).toString(16)

The hexadecimal value of -59 is -3b

But it should actually be ffffffffffffffC5

Any assistance on this matter would be greatly appreciated!

Answer №1

If the value is a negative number, its sign will be maintained. Specifically when dealing with binary numbers (consisting of zeros and ones) in a base-2 system, the output will show the binary representation of the number with a minus sign preceding it to indicate two's complement notation.

This is the functionality of the toString() method for objects of the Number type; it does not directly produce the two's complement representation.

In simpler terms, when you use the toString() method, it converts the number as if it were positive and displays it in hexadecimal format. In the case that the number is negative, it simply adds a minus sign before the displayed representation.
