What is the best way to return JSON data in a compressed (gzip) format to an Ajax Request using Java?

When sending compressed JSON in response to an Ajax request from my Java program, I understand that I need to set the Content-Encoding in the Response Header to gzip. However, are there any additional steps I should take?

Answer №1

It's important to confirm that a) the client (browser or app) supports gzip encoding and can handle it b) the server (hosting your java application) is set up to automatically send gzipped responses. When the server is configured to send gzipped responses, the content-type header will typically be determined by the server.

Thank you all for your valuable contributions. I was able to successfully implement the solution using the steps below.

To begin with, in my web application's web.xml file, I inserted the following filter configuration:

<filter>
    <filter-name>GZipFilter</filter-name>
    <filter-class> org.mortbay.servlet.GzipFilter</filter-class>
    <init-param>
        <param-name>mimeTypes</param-name>
        <param-value>application/json</param-value>
    </init-param>
</filter>

<filter-mapping>
    <filter-name>GZipFilter</filter-name>
    <url-pattern>*.data</url-pattern>
</filter-mapping>

Furthermore, within the servlet.xml file, I added the following bean property to the DataViewController bean.

<beans:property name="contentType" value="application/json" />

It is important for your server-side code to compress the response using gzip, in addition to configuring the content-encoding header. For a detailed example, you can refer to the implementation in GZIPResponseWrapper.java.
