Utilizing various camera set-ups within Three.js

How can I smoothly switch between two different cameras in Three.js while transitioning from one to the other?

Imagine a scene with a rock and a tree, each having its own dedicated camera setup. I'm looking for a way to seamlessly transition between these two cameras.

Note: My configuration includes two cameras sharing one viewport.

For example:

// Rock camera
const rockCamera = new THREE.PerspectiveCamera(75, sizes.width/sizes.height, 0.1, 1000);
rockCamera.rotation.x = THREE.MathUtils.degToRad(-50);
rockCamera.position.set(2, 13, 8,);
scene.add(rockCamera);

// Tree camera
const treeCamera = new THREE.PerspectiveCamera(75, sizes.width/sizes.height, 0.1, 1000);
treeCamera.rotation.x = THREE.MathUtils.degToRad(25);
treeCamera.position.set(7, 5, 12,);
scene.add(treeCamera);

Answer №1

To create a smooth camera motion, utilize a single camera and interpolate between the initial position/rotation and the final position/rotation gradually over time. For example:

const camera = new THREE.PerspectiveCamera(75, sizes.width/sizes.height, 0.1, 1000);
camera.rotation.x = THREE.MathUtils.degToRad(-50);
camera.position.set(2, 13, 8);

let pos0 = new THREE.Vector3(2, 13, 8);
let rot0 = new THREE.Vector3(THREE.MathUtils.degToRad(-50), 0, 0);
let pos1 = new THREE.Vector3(7, 5, 12);
let rot1 = new THREE.Vector3(THREE.MathUtils.degToRad(25), 0, 0);

The variable w is a decimal value ranging from 0.0 to 1.0. Adjust this value gradually and update the camera's position and rotation in each frame:

let pos = new THREE.Vector3().lerpVectors(pos0, pos1, w);
let rot = new THREE.Vector3().lerpVectors(rot0, rot1, w);
camera.position.set(pos.x, pos.y, pos.z);
camera.rotation.set(rot.x, rot.y, rot.z);

Answer №2

To enhance your camera control, consider adjusting your perspective on how the camera operates.

When it comes to rendering on the canvas, smooth transitions between two cameras with different positions pose a challenge.

Instead of using rockCamera and treeCamera, try employing empty objects like rockObject and treeObject as position markers for smoothly transitioning your primary camera.

For better camera interpolation techniques, utilize tools such as tween engines like Tween.js.
Check out this example here:

Answer №3

If you want to achieve a smooth transition where the tree camera is displayed at one point, then the rock camera at another point, and a blend of both in between, utilizing post-processing is the way to go. Three.js has provided an insightful example demonstrating this type of transition with two scenes, but adapting it to work with one scene and two cameras is quite simple.
