Using JavaScript, post an image to imgur (API version 3) from a canvas

Currently, I am working on an amusing Chrome experiment called the Mustache Mirror! If you're interested, you can check it out here. I am aiming to incorporate the Imgur API V3 for uploading an image from the canvas to Imgur and displaying the link. Unfortunately, I am facing some challenges as most of the examples I come across are based on the V2 API...

My approach involves using canvas.toDataURL:

var dataURL = canvas.toDataURL("image/png");
return dataURL.replace(/^data:image\/(png|jpg);base64,/, "");

Answer №1

My personal opinion is that the Imgur documentation is lacking, but I managed to find a solution by seeking help on Stack Overflow:

try {
    var img = document.getElementById('myCanvas').toDataURL('image/jpeg', 0.9).split(',')[1];
} catch(e) {
    var img = document.getElementById('myCanvas').toDataURL().split(',')[1];
}

$.ajax({
    url: 'https://api.imgur.com/3/image',
    type: 'post',
    headers: {
        Authorization: 'Client-ID <CHANGE_THIS_TO_BE_YOUR_CLIENT_ID>'
    },
    data: {
        image: img
    },
    dataType: 'json',
    success: function(response) {
        if(response.success) {
            window.location = response.data.link;
        }
    }
});

Remember to replace

<CHANGE_THIS_TO_BE_YOUR_CLIENT_ID>
with the client id you receive upon registering your app here (I selected the "anonymous usage without user authorization" option).
