Tips on customizing Google Analytics code with Google Tag Manager

My website is currently equipped with the Google Analytics tracking code implemented through Google Tag Manager. The standard Google Analytics code typically appears as follows:

<script>
(function(i,s,o,g,r,a,m){i['GoogleAnalyticsObject']=r; i[r]=i[r]||function(){
(i[r].q=i[r].q||[]).push(arguments)},i[r].l=1*new Date();a=s.createElement(o),
m=s.getElementsByTagName(o)[0];a.async=1;a.src=g;m.parentNode.insertBefore(a,m)
})(window,document,'script','https://www.google-analytics.com/analytics.js','ga');

ga('create', 'UA-XXXXXXXX-1', 'auto');
ga('send', 'pageview');

In my case, only the Google Tag Manager code is visible in the page source:

<!-- Google Tag Manager -->
<noscript><iframe src="//www.googletagmanager.com/ns.html?id=XXX-XXXXXX"
height="0" width="0" style="display:none;visibility:hidden"></iframe></noscript>
<script>(function(w,d,s,l,i){w[l]=w[l]||[];w[l].push({'gtm.start':
new Date().getTime(),event:'gtm.js'});var f=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0],
j=d.createElement(s),dl=l!='dataLayer'?'&l='+l:'';j.async=true;j.src=
'//www.googletagmanager.com/gtm.js?id='+i+dl;f.parentNode.insertBefore(j,f);
})(window,document,'script','dataLayer','XXX-XXXXXX');</script>
<!-- End Google Tag Manager -->

Now I'm looking to insert additional lines of code within the Google Analytics script between these two lines:

ga('create', 'UA-XXXXXXXX-1', 'auto');

insert *code* here

ga('send', 'pageview');

I haven't found a way to edit the original analytics code through Tag Manager so any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Answer №1

It all comes down to what you intend to accomplish with that code.

Possibility 1

If it's for a typical use case, Tag Manager should provide an easy-to-use form when adding a Universal Analytics tag - allowing you to configure specific options within the tag:

Possibility 2

If this solution doesn't meet your needs, you can switch the type of your GA tag to a custom js tag, insert the original snippet, and make direct modifications as needed.
