The Vimeo player JavaScript API is experiencing issues on iOS devices

I am facing an issue where the API for playing a video only works on iOS after the play button is clicked in the player. However, it works fine on desktop and Chrome for Android.

http://codepen.io/bdougherty/pen/JgDfm

$(function() {
    var iframe = $('#player1')[0];
    var player = $f(iframe);
    var status = $('.status');

    // Adding listeners for pause, finish, and playProgress when the player is ready
    player.addEvent('ready', function() {
        status.text('ready');

        player.addEvent('pause', onPause);
        player.addEvent('finish', onFinish);
        player.addEvent('playProgress', onPlayProgress);
    });

    // Calling the API when a button is clicked
    $('button').bind('click', function() {
        player.api($(this).text().toLowerCase());
    });

    function onPause() {
        status.text('paused');
    }

    function onFinish() {
        status.text('finished');
    }

    function onPlayProgress(data) {
        status.text(data.seconds + 's played');
    }
});
<script src="https://f.vimeocdn.com/js/froogaloop2.min.js"></script>
<iframe id="player1" src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/76979871?api=1&player_id=player1" width="630" height="354" frameborder="0" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen></iframe>

<div>
  <button>Play</button>
  <button>Pause</button>
  <p>Status: <span class="status">&hellip;</span></p>
</div>

Are there any workarounds available for this issue?

Answer №1

After reaching out to Vimeo's customer support team, I learned that the behavior of video playback varies between Chrome Mobile on Android and iOS devices. While Chrome Mobile allows the use of the Vimeo Player, playback on iOS is managed by the device's native media player.

They mentioned that the Play method can only be triggered after the user manually initiates playback by tapping the play button on the screen in iOS devices.
