The event listener for "popstate" is not triggering on the .document

Struggling with implementing a popstate event handler on an Ajax page using the .document object:

document.addEventListener("popstate", myPopState);

Despite my efforts, this handler never seems to fire.

I was hoping that after reloading the page, the popstate event trigger would automatically be removed.

When receiving a successful response from an AJAX call, you have the ability to utilize the following code:

var msg = "Anything you desire";
var customUrl = "www.example.com";

window.history.pushState({"html":msg,"pageTitle":"My Title"}, "", customUrl);
window.onpopstate = function(event) {
    alert('The back button has been clicked');
    // Add any additional functionality here
}

UPDATE

$(window).on("beforeunload", function(){
    alert('Make your AJAX call here');
});
