The current status of the ajax call is set to 0

I am currently attempting to retrieve information from a remote server on my local machine. The readyState seems to be fine, equal to 4. However, the status is consistently showing as 0 instead of 200. When I click the button, it doesn't return anything.

Here is the code:

<html>
<head>
<script type="text/javascript">
function loadXMLDoc()
{
var xmlhttp;
if (window.XMLHttpRequest)
  {// code for IE7+, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari
  xmlhttp=new XMLHttpRequest();
  }
else
  {// code for IE6, IE5
  xmlhttp=new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP");
  }
xmlhttp.onreadystatechange=function()
  {
  if (xmlhttp.readyState==4 && xmlhttp.status==200)
    {
    document.getElementById("myDiv").innerHTML=xmlhttp.responseText;
    }
  }
xmlhttp.open("GET",'http://www.spartanbook.com/textbooks_xml.asp?control=campus&campus=45&term=80',true);
xmlhttp.send();
}
</script>
</head>
<body>

<div id="myDiv"><h2>Let AJAX change this text</h2></div>
<button type="button" onclick="loadXMLDoc()">Change Content</button>

</body>
</html>

This code snippet is adapted from w3schools with only the URL being replaced. The URL works perfectly fine when inserted into the browser's address bar.

Any suggestions or ideas on how to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated!

Answer №1

Ensure that your request is not crossing domains.

For instance, if you are not hosting this page on , you may receive an access denied error, resulting in a readyState of 4 but a status of 0.

If you must send a cross domain request, consider using a proxy server.

Answer №2

The presence of this error code suggests that the returned data was void of content. It appears there could be a potential firewall complication.

Answer №3

As mentioned by Gavin, it appears that your issue stems from attempting a cross domain request, which is commonly blocked by browsers for security purposes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same_origin_policy

To resolve this problem, I recommend transferring your code from your local system to a location that adheres to the "Same Origin Policy", such as within www.spartanbook.com.

Nevertheless, there exists a workaround for this obstacle, and it involves utilizing JSONP. This method enables you to retrieve JSON data from an application on a different domain.
