Stop jwplayer video from being downloaded on the Chrome mobile browser

Currently, I am facing an issue with the JWPlayer video where I am unable to prevent it from being downloaded. On mobile Chrome browser, if I double click while the video is playing, it gives me the download option, which is not ideal.

Despite going through numerous articles and blog posts on this topic, I have been unsuccessful in finding a solution so far. I would prefer not to use the HLS stream option. Is there a specific parameter that JWPlayer utilizes to recognize authenticated users and play the video only for them? Alternatively, are there any other methods or tricks to achieve this?

Answer №1

If you are concerned about the possibility of authorized users copying your video, it's important to recognize that preventing downloads entirely is essentially impossible. The video must reach the user's device in order for them to watch it, making it relatively easy for determined individuals to bypass any URL obfuscation measures.

To deter unauthorized copying, many opt to encrypt the video file and securely transmit the decryption key separately.

This method mirrors the functionality of Digital Rights Management (DRM) systems.

In more robust DRM setups, stringent controls ensure that neither end users nor applications can access the encrypted video or decryption key directly. Instead, these components operate within a secure media path on the device, beyond the reach of most software or operating systems.
