SignalR error: A type conversion issue has occurred where it is not possible to directly convert a task returning an object to a string

I'm encountering an issue with my C# hub class where the JavaScript code is returning a System.Threading.Tasks.Task instead of a string. I need help modifying the JavaScript method to return an actual string.

Below is the hub class:

public String getMessage(int id)
{
    var hubContext = GlobalHost.ConnectionManager.GetHubContext<ChatHub>();
    var s = hubContext.Clients.All.getMessage(id);

    return s;

}

JavaScript:

chat.client.getMessage = function (id) {
                for (i = 0; i < messageArr.length; i++) {
                    if (messageArr[i].ID == id) {
                        var s = messageArr[i].ID + messageArr[i].Name + messageArr[i].Content;
                        window.alert(s);
                        return s;
                    }
                }
            }

Answer №1

SignalR does not have the ability to receive return values from clients back to hubs. The task that is returned by Clients.All will only be completed once all clients have been called.

If you require return values from clients, you must manually invoke the hub with the appropriate value and then identify the caller using your own unique message id.

For more information, refer to the documentation

You cannot retrieve a return value from a client method; attempting syntax like int x = Clients.All.add(1,1) will not function as intended.
