Serve static files outside the root directory with Grunt Connect

I'm facing issues configuring my grunt file to include references (css & js) in my index.html

Below is my project structure:

src/
  demo/
    index.html
  app.js
bower_components/
  angular/
    angular.js

index.html:

<script src="./bower_components/angular/angular.js"></script>
<script src="../app.js"></script>

gruntFile:

connect: {
  demo: {
    options: {
      port: 9000,
      hostname: 'localhost',
      open: true,
      base: 'src/demo'
    },
    livereload: {
      options: {
        middleware: function(connect) {
          return [
            connect().use(
              '/bower_components',
              connect.static('./bower_components')
            )
          ];
        }
      }
    }
  }
}

For some reason, index.html cannot locate app.js or angular.js.

Answer №1

Here are a few important observations:

  • The root of the website is located at src/demo;
  • This means that /index.html corresponds to src/demo/index.html;
  • Therefore, referencing ../app.js from within index.html is invalid since you cannot navigate "up" from the web root;
  • When using ./bower_components/..., the browser looks for the bower_components directory in src/demo/ due to its relative path nature, it should be changed to /bower_components/...
