Safari on iOS 9 having trouble playing embedded YouTube videos

Recently, I discovered that my YouTube embedded videos are not playing on iOS devices when on my website unless you click in the top left corner of the video. Even after removing all extra YouTube parameters and using standard iFrame embed code, the issue persists where the videos won't play upon clicking the center play button.

While there have been some reports of similar issues in the past, those were resolved by either Apple or YouTube about 4-5 years ago.

For example: YouTube video directly embedded in a post

No changes have been made to our website's CSS or JavaScript, so it's unclear what caused this problem or when it started. It was just something I noticed today.

Any assistance with resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Answer №1

After countless attempts and persistence, I finally uncovered the solution. The issue stemmed from the official MailChimp Wordpress Plugin, even though I had stopped using it. Despite not being in use, it was still active. Disabling it resolved the problem of YouTube videos not playing on iOS devices.

I should have initially prioritized deactivating each WP plugin one by one to troubleshoot. Lesson learned. Hopefully, this insight can assist others experiencing similar challenges!
