Replacing text using regex results in whitespace

How can I eliminate text and spaces?

For instance:

http://www.exampleweb.com/myprogram.rar
http://www.examplebackup.com/mybackups.rar
http://www.exampleweb.com/myprogram1.rar

I have used something similar to remove the second line:

http://www.examplebackup.com/.+?.rar

The final outcome is:

http://www.exampleweb.com/myprogram.rar

http://www.exampleweb.com/myprogram1.rar

But I would like to achieve that with no remaining white spaces:

http://www.exampleweb.com/myprogram.rar
http://www.exampleweb.com/myprogram1.rar

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as I am a complete beginner with regex.

Answer №1

Your regex pattern does not account for the newline at the end, so it does not affect it. To correct this, include \n at the end.

Check out this Regex101 demo to see the difference. Notice how the match includes a newline after movie.

Here are a couple of additional suggestions that may or may not apply to your specific regex:

  • Be sure to escape your slashes (/ => \/) in your regex to avoid potential issues.
  • Remember to escape literal periods (. => \.) to avoid matching any character in that position unintentionally.

Answer №2

It looks like you might have overlooked escaping the "any char" operator. Here's a suggestion for updating it:

http://www.examplebackup.com/mybackups/.+?\.rar
