Obtain the names of the cities that the Google Maps route passes through

Currently working on a website that integrates Google Map API v3. Is there a method to gather the names of the places or cities along the route from point A to B? The page utilizes JavaScript for functionality.

Answer №1

Take a look at the Directions API documentation. It appears that you receive a DirectionsResult object which contains an array of DirectionsRoutes. Each DirectionsRoute includes an array of DirectionsLegs, further broken down into individual DirectionsSteps. Extracting the start_location and/or end_location from each step provides their Lat/Lng representation. To learn how to convert these coordinates into city names (reverse-geocoding), refer to this answer:

Google Maps: how to get country, state/province/region, city given a lat/long value?

In essence, the directions supplied by Google Maps are segmented into various subsections, allowing extraction of latitude/longitude information at different levels. Utilize Google's geocoding API to transform these coordinates into identifiable city names.
