Is there a specific technological framework that serves as the foundation for the development of the Google Body Browser

I'm looking for some insight into the framework used to develop Google Body browser. Can anyone provide more information?

So far I know it involves WebGL and Javascript, but I'm curious whether they utilize a GWT extension for WebGL interaction or if they write the js code manually then minify it, or perhaps rely on another framework altogether.

Any help or guidance on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Answer №1

The software library being utilized is known as tdl.js http://code.google.com/p/threedlibrary/

[edit]

An exciting development is that Google Body has been open sourced! Read more about it here:

If you are interested in exploring the source code further, you can do so by visiting http://code.google.com/p/open-3d-viewer/

Answer №2

Discover a variety of GWT WebGL libraries and wrappers here: http://code.google.com/hosting/search?q=gwt+webgl&projectsearch=Search+projects

During a Google IO session, there was mention of a WebGL library that may be worth exploring further. For more information on webGL and GWT integration, consider watching relevant sessions at: http://www.google.com/events/io/2011

If GWT wasn't utilized, the alternative approach would be writing JavaScript code and compiling it using Google Closure Compiler, which offers many advantages compared to traditional JavaScript development methods employed by Google.

Answer №3

Utilizing the Google Closure Library along with its compiler.

The code generated by GWT includes a $gwt_version variable and other functions and variables containing gwt in their names, however, this is not present here. Upon inspecting the code of the Body Browser, you'll notice a reference to goog.structs.SimplePool, which is a class from the Closure Library:

There doesn't seem to be any specific framework designed for WebGL (aside from options like ForPlay that provide abstraction, allowing the same code to run on WebGL or canvas— or even a regular JVM or Flash as ActionScript—, although this is a distinct approach, especially considering the GWT foundation of ForPlay).
