Is there a particular Javascript event triggered when the user clicks on the Stop loading button?

When the user clicks the 'Stop Load' button (red X in most browsers) or presses the Esc key on the keyboard, I need to execute some Javascript code. I've seen solutions for capturing the Esc key press by using document.body.onkeyup, but I haven't found anything that addresses mouse clicks on the 'Stop' button.

Answer №1

While Internet Explorer includes a document.onstop event, other web browsers do not support this feature. This event is triggered when the user clicks Stop or presses Esc, or if the user navigates to another page during loading.

In other browsers, there doesn't seem to be a reliable method to trigger an event upon clicking the Stop button. One potential workaround could involve maintaining an open connection to the server (similar to the Comet approach), continuously streaming a keep-alive signal, and monitoring for the end of the stream (which would likely occur if the Stop button was clicked).

Answer №2

If you're trying to figure out if images are still being loaded on the page, one option is to utilize the onabort event to detect when the loading process stops.

Detecting a mouse click could be challenging since it typically occurs outside of the current browsing window.

Answer №3

Unfortunately, there is no universal method for achieving this across different browsers.

Nevertheless, Internet Explorer offers a unique event called onstop, which triggers on the body element when the stop button is activated. While you cannot prevent the stop button action from occurring, you can identify when it has been used in IE.
