Improving the innerHTML syntax

I am looking for the correct syntax to add content to an element using innerHTML. Here is an example that isn't working as expected:

   openNewWindow: function(content) {
popupWin = window.open(content,
    'open_window',
    'menubar, toolbar, location, directories, status, scrollbars, resizable, dependent, width=640, height=480, left=0, top=0')
},

for (var index in mv.exifImages) {
        ele.innerHTML += "<p onclick = openNewWindow(mv.exifImages[index]> image" + index + "</p>";
    }

Answer №1

It seems that way to me. The variable index is confined to local scope.

for (var index in mv.exifImages) {
        ele.innerHTML += "<p onclick = 'openNewWindow(\"" + mv.exifImages[index] + "\")'> image" + index + "</p>";
    }

Answer №2

To insert text inside an element, use the appendChild method:

const targetElement = document.getElementById("target-element");
const newText = document.createTextNode("New text to be inserted");
targetElement.appendChild(newText);

Using appendChild is preferred over directly manipulating innerHTML as it does not interfere with existing event listeners, such as onclick events. More information on this topic can be found here:
Preventing Event Listener Loss When Appending to InnerHTML

Answer №3

The issue does not lie with innerHTML, but rather with the structure of your code.

    openNewWindow: function(content) {
        popupWin = window.open(content,
            'open_window',
            'menubar, toolbar, location, directories, status, scrollbars, resizable, dependent, width=640, height=480, left=0, top=0');
        // call to window.open ended here
    },
    // based on the openNewWindow definition and preceding comma,
    // it appears we are within an object declaration!

    // You should avoid embedding a for loop directly within an object declaration!!!
    for (var index in mv.exifImages) {
        ele.innerHTML += "<p onclick = openNewWindow(mv.exifImages[index]> image" + index + "</p>";
    }

Place your for loop in a more appropriate location, such as inside a function, or provide details about the specific error you encountered.
