Implement a stylish fading in/out effect for the Bootstrap 4 navbar in a Rails application as you scroll

Can anyone help me achieve a top navbar in Bootstrap 4 that fades in when the user scrolls down slightly on the page? Currently, I have a script that makes the navbar appear, but it does so abruptly. Here's the script I'm using:

<script>
$(document).scroll(function(e){
    var scrollTop = $(document).scrollTop();
    if(scrollTop > 200){

        $('.navbar').removeClass('static-top').addClass('fixed-top');

    } else {
        $('.navbar').removeClass('fixed-top').addClass('static-top');
    }
});
</script>

<nav class="navbar navbar-expand-lg navbar-light bg-light">
  <a class="navbar-brand" href="#">Navbar</a>
  <button class="navbar-toggler" type="button" data-toggle="collapse" data-target="#navbarSupportedContent" aria-controls="navbarSupportedContent" aria-expanded="false" aria-label="Toggle navigation">
    <span class="navbar-toggler-icon"></span>
  </button>

  <div class="collapse navbar-collapse" id="navbarSupportedContent">
    <ul class="navbar-nav mr-auto">
      <li class="nav-item active">
        <a class="nav-link" href="#">Home <span class="sr-only">(current)</span></a>
      </li>
      <li class="nav-item">
        <a class="nav-link" href="#">Link</a>
      </li>
      <li class="nav-item dropdown">
        <a class="nav-link dropdown-toggle" href="#" id="navbarDropdown" role="button" data-toggle="dropdown" aria-haspopup="true" aria-expanded="false">
          Dropdown
        </a>
        <div class="dropdown-menu" aria-labelledby="navbarDropdown">
          <a class="dropdown-item" href="#">Action</a>
          <a class="dropdown-item" href="#">Another action</a>
          <div class="dropdown-divider"></div>
          <a class="dropdown-item" href="#">Something else here</a>
        </div>
      </li>
      <li class="nav-item">
        <a class="nav-link disabled" href="#">Disabled</a>
      </li>
    </ul>
    <form class="form-inline my-2 my-lg-0">
      <input class="form-control mr-sm-2" type="search" placeholder="Search" aria-label="Search">
      <button class="btn btn-outline-primary my-2 my-sm-0" type="submit">Search</button>
    </form>
  </div>
</nav><!--./nav-->

I want to achieve a navbar effect similar to this example:

Answer №1

$('.navbar').removeClass('static-top').addClass('fixed-top');

Prior to using .removeClass(), it is recommended to utilize .toggle() or other similar jquery effects. For more information, please refer to the official documentation

If you decide to use .toggle(), keep in mind that it will conceal the navbar. You may want to seek assistance on the appropriate section of stackoverflow (jquery) for guidance on how to create this animation and consult the jquery documentation for further insight...
