Identifying the relationship between child and parent components in Vue.js

I am new to Vue.js and I am practicing some simple exercises on communication between Vue components. However, I am struggling with understanding who is a child component and who is a parent component. For example, consider the following code snippet:

HTML:

<body>
    <div id="root" class="component">
        <coupon @applied="onCouponApplied"></coupon>
    </div>
    <script src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/vue/dist/vue.js"></script>
    <link rel="stylesheet" href="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/bulma/0.7.5/css/bulma.css"/>
    <!-- <script src="app.js"></script> -->
    <script src="main.js"></script>
</body>

VUE.JS:

Vue.component("coupon", {
    template: `
        <div>
            <input palceholder="Put your name" @blur="onCouponApplied"/>
        </div>
    `,
    data() {
        return {
            message: ""
        };
    },
    methods: {
        onCouponApplied() {
            this.$emit("applied");
        }
    }
});

new Vue({
    el: "#root",
    methods: {
        onCouponApplied() {
            alert("It's working!");
        }
    }
});

In this code snippet, we have the component "coupon" and the "new Vue". I believe that the "new Vue" is the parent component. However, I am still trying to grasp how it all works together. Can someone explain to me in a simple way how this interaction works? I have read the Vue.js documentation but I still find it challenging.

Answer №1

When it comes to components, they all have a connection to the Vue instance as you mentioned. This means that your coupon component is nested within your root div. The parent component can be thought of as the container for another component.

For example, a "UserListView" would contain a list component which in turn contains user components. In this case, the view acts as the parent to the list, while the list serves as the parent to the individual user components.

Answer №2

Every part of your application is made up of components. Each Vue app has a main component that serves as the parent component (Vue instance).

Any other component you create will be either a direct or indirect child of the Vue instance.

As stated in the official documentation:

A Vue application is composed of a root Vue instance created with new Vue, potentially organized into a hierarchy of nested, reusable components.

Answer №3

The main div acts as the root parent in this scenario. By initializing a fresh Vue instance with the code new Vue({, it becomes linked to the div element identified by the id 'root' ( el: "#root", ). Inside this division, the coupon component is nested as its child.
