I am curious about the distinction between two closures

Can someone please explain the distinction between these two closure examples?

(function(window, undefined) {
   // JavaScript code
})(window);

Here's another example:

(function(window) {
   // JavaScript code
})(window, undefined);

Answer №1

If you find yourself working in an outdated environment like Internet Explorer 8, keep in mind that undefined may not always be what you expect it to be. In such cases, it can be redefined like any other variable.

For example, you could do something like this:

undefined = 42
console.log(undefined) // 42

Additionally, if your closure function is defined with 2 arguments but you only provide 1 argument (such as passing in only window), the second argument (undefined) will remain undefined for security reasons. This helps prevent any potential conflicts with other scripts that may attempt to redefine undefined.
