How do I define the specific icon to display on the splash screen for progressive web apps?

In my Progressive Web App (PWA), I have set icons at sizes 144 and 512. Although both icons appear in the application tab in Chrome, the splash screen displays a really small icon (I assume it's using the 144 icon). Is there a method to indicate which icon should be utilized for the splash screen? Additionally, will the splash screen consistently display the largest image?

Answer №1

To ensure optimal performance, it is recommended to have a minimum icon size of 192px and also create versions at 256px, 384px, and 512px. However, if you are concerned about data usage for the splash screen on low-density devices, you can use smaller sizes and Chrome will select the most suitable image.

The icon used for installing to the homescreen is determined by the largest icon specified in one of the following <link> tags:

<link rel="icon" sizes="192x192" href="nice-highres.png">    (recommended)
<link rel="icon" sizes="128x128" href="niceicon.png">
