How can JSON be formatted nicely on a webpage using JavaScript?

It appears to be a straightforward task for JavaScript to handle the pretty-printing of JSON. Has anyone come across or created a JavaScript function that can achieve this?

Answer №1

If you're looking for a simple method, try running the following command:

JSON.stringify(data, null, "  ");

Substitute the variable data with the specific json object you wish to format nicely.

Keep in mind that not all browsers come equipped with built-in JSON functionality. To address this, you can incorporate json.js created by Douglas Crockford, which will introduce the global JSON object if native support is lacking.

I have a handy bookmarklet code that I always use on my browsers to format JSON paragraphs for better readability

javascript:(function(){document.body.firstChild.innerHTML = JSON.stringify(JSON.parse(document.body.firstChild.innerHTML), null, 4);})();

Adding a bookmarklet is a breeze - simply right-click on the bookmarks bar, select Add/New, give it a name, and paste the JavaScript code in the URL/location box

Because modern browsers tend to display JSON responses within a <pre> tag, I utilize body.firstChild to target and format the content
