How can I retrieve the body from a GET request using Express?

Every time I attempt to execute my code, it returns an error message indicating invalid text.

app.post("/charge", (req, res) => {
    console.log(req.body)
})

Answer №1

According to the documentation for req.body:

req.body contains key-value pairs of data that are submitted in the request body. By default, it is undefined and gets populated when using body-parsing middleware like express.json() or express.urlencoded().

An example below illustrates how to use body-parsing middleware to fill req.body.

By default, the request body has not been read from the incoming stream yet and therefore hasn't been parsed into req.body. To accomplish this, appropriate middleware needs to be used to handle it (or manual parsing can be done, although using pre-written middleware is usually more convenient).

The choice of middleware depends on the type of data present in the body (urlEncoded data, JSON data, or something else).

Here's a snippet from the documentation illustrating this:

var express = require('express')

var app = express()

app.use(express.json()) // for parsing application/json
app.use(express.urlencoded({ extended: true })) // for parsing application/x-www-form-urlencoded

app.post('/profile', function (req, res, next) {
  console.log(req.body)
  res.json(req.body)
})
