How can an Express.js server detect when a browser has been closed or reloaded?

Currently tackling a project with an Express.js server. One query I have is how can this server detect when one of its users (browser) has been closed or reloaded? Any insights on this would be greatly appreciated!

Answer №1

Web servers do not have a standard way to detect when a page has been closed in the browser since browsers do not automatically inform the server of such actions. Most websites do not require this information. Instead, a common approach is to use client-side Javascript to monitor user interactions and then send ajax calls to the server when necessary.

If you need to determine if a browser window or page has been closed, one method is to establish a webSocket or socket.io connection with the server. This connection remains active as long as the page is open, but closes when the user performs an action like navigating away, reloading the page, closing the tab, or shutting down the browser. The server can interpret the closure of the webSocket or socket.io connection as a signal that the page has been closed in the browser.

To distinguish between a page close and a reload, you can implement a timer system using user cookies. When the original connection is closed, set a short timer (e.g. 1 second). If the user does not initiate a new connection within that time frame, it indicates a page close. On the other hand, if a new request is made within the designated time, it suggests a page reload. Cookies are typically used to identify the user making the request.
