Hover over to reveal the text

Would it be feasible to implement JavaScript so that when hovering over or clicking on a word on a webpage, the word can be captured in a variable? I am interested in creating a Firefox extension with this functionality.

Answer №1

There is no actual function for clicking a word since it is not considered an object. However, you can still highlight a word and retrieve its value. Here is an example:

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Window.getSelection

function bar() {
    var selection = window.getSelection();
    alert(selection);
    var selectedRange = selection.getRangeAt(0);
    // perform actions with the range
}

Answer №2

Did you know there is an HTML attribute that can be used to display a tooltip on any element?

<p><abbr title="World Health Organization">WHO</abbr> was established in 1948.</p>
