Having a minor problem in attempting to retrieve a random value

Having trouble generating a random number from a function. Can someone help explain?

const MyButton = document.querySelector(".Flipper");

    MyButton.addEventListener("click", recordLog);

    function recordLog (){

        MyButton.style.backgroundColor = 'red';

        let RandomNumber = Math.floor(Math.random() * 256);

        return RandomNumber;

        console.log(RandomNumber);

    };

I expect to retrieve the random number and log it to the console

Answer №1

Once a return statement is reached in a function, no further statements are executed as it signifies the end of the function. Therefore, it is important to place all necessary actions before the return statement to ensure they are carried out. Typically, the return statement is placed at the conclusion of the function.

Answer №2

The console.log statement will not be executed after the return statement. To resolve this issue, update the function as shown below:

function generateRandomNumber (){

        MyButton.style.backgroundColor = 'red';

        let randomNumber = Math.floor(Math.random() * 256);

        console.log(randomNumber);

        return randomNumber;

    };
