Guide to utilizing the Microsoft Office 2013 JavaScript API within a standalone script

I am looking for guidance on using standalone JavaScript to script Microsoft Office 2013 without integrating it into a web page or creating UI components. Specifically, I want to know how to modify the contents of MS Word or MS Excel directly from my Windows 7 machine. Can anyone provide step-by-step instructions or point me in the right direction for this task?

Answer №1

If you want to execute JavaScript code on Windows without the need for a browser, you can utilize Windows Script Host. By default, Windows associates .js files with wscript.exe, which allows you to run scripts without opening a console window. Alternatively, you can run them using cscript.exe to have access to a console:

cscript.exe /nologo yourfile.js

This method also grants you access to Office applications through ActiveXObject:

var excel = new ActiveXObject("Excel.Application");

With this approach, you can interact with the COM API provided by Office.
