Although it may not be the most exciting tale, our best source of documentation (besides jsopcode.tbl, as mentioned by Alex K.) is the interpreter implementation (jsinterp.cpp). We have acknowledged on multiple occasions that newcomers would benefit from a more formalized document outlining stack state transitions and explaining side effects. I have taken the initiative to create one here:
