Guide on utilizing Chrome Push Notifications on an HTTP website

I'm looking to incorporate Chrome push notifications (GCM) on my HTTP site. I've read that it's typically only for HTTPS sites, but is there a workaround or sample code available for integrating push notifications on an HTTP site?

I'm feeling a bit stuck here, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer №1

In order for the Web API to function properly, a service worker is required and the component that receives the events must be using https.

It is uncertain if registration through http is possible using some kind of iframe manipulation, but relying on this method is not recommended. Even if successful, there is no assurance it will continue to work as the documentation specifies that it is specifically for https websites.

Answer №2

Ensuring security with an https site is crucial. However, a potential solution involves maintaining an https domain alongside an http site. By utilizing an iframe or Modal to collect subscriptions on the Http site and redirecting to the secure https service worker, this workaround creates a seamless user experience while prioritizing security.
