Guide on setting up a new NPM and JavaScript project within Visual Studio 2015

Whenever I watch tutorials, they always mention having a "special npm reference" that I seem to be missing.

All I can find are the "normal" references (.net assemblies). I also can't locate any project type labeled as pure "Javascript."

I am currently using Update 3. Do I need something specific in order to make this function?

I have both a package.json and Gulpfile.js in my project, and successfully compile LESS with them, but still cannot see these references.

If you're looking to work with NPM integration or JavaScript projects in Visual Studio, you'll need to install the Node.js Tools extension. This will enable these features for you. In newer versions of VS, there should be a shortcut within the New Project wizard to easily add this extension.
