Exporting the default object scope in Vue.js allows for easy sharing

Could someone please clarify the usage of export default in Vue files? Appreciate it.

For example:

HelloWorld.vue

<template>
  <div id="app">

    <HelloWorld />
  </div>
</template>

<script>
import HelloWorld from "./components/HelloWorld";

export default {
  name: "App",
  components: {
    HelloWorld
  }
}

console.log(HelloWorld) // ReferenceError: HelloWorld is not defined
</script>
App.vue
<template>
  <div id="app">

    <HelloWorld />
  </div>
</template>

<script>
import HelloWorld from "./components/HelloWorld";

export default {
  name: "App",
  components: {
    HelloWorld
  }
}

console.log(HelloWorld) // HelloWorld is defined
</script>

Answer №1

If you are interested in utilizing a component within itself, then what you need is called a recursive component. You can find more information on how to implement this by visiting https://v2.vuejs.org/v2/guide/components-edge-cases.html#Recursive-Components. To achieve this, simply change the name option value in HelloWorld.vue to something unique. (It's crucial to note that both HelloWorld.vue and App.vue share the same name)

Keep in mind: Using a component recursively can lead to an endless loop, so it's important to include a conditional check that will eventually evaluate to false.

Furthermore, the ReferenceError you're encountering is not due to the scope of export default but rather because you are trying to use the component before it has been defined. One solution is to utilize webpack's asynchronous import feature (don't forget to assign a unique name to the component as well). In order to perform asynchronous imports, remove the initial import statement from the script section at the top and incorporate the component like this:

components: {
      HelloWorld: () => import('./components/HelloWorld.vue')
}

Note: I assume that you are employing a webpack build system for this setup.

Utilizing export default allows for the establishment of local Vue component registration.
