Exploring THREE.js with VIVE Headset (JavaScript/Browser/WebGL in the Steam Universe)

Can you use THREE.js JavaScript to create experiences for the VIVE headset?

Is it feasible to display a Chrome web browser in fullscreen mode on the VIVE?

One challenge I foresee is tapping into the data from the controller paddles. How can this be achieved?

If Steam is required for the drivers, does it offer a browser with WebGL/VR integration?

Does the VIVE headset come equipped with a camera for augmented reality (AR) capabilities?

Answer №1

After some searching, I've come across information that relates to my original question. According to this source, WebGL is utilized in the PS4's UI design.

In a somewhat indirect manner, this video suggests that Edge browser is compatible with WebGL, indicating potential availability of JavaScript and THREE.js as well.

The mention of Babylon "JS" further confirms the GL aspect of the query.

My understanding on VIVE integration remains uncertain. While it may function as a headset, the absence of a controller driver presents unique challenges compared to traditional input methods like a mouse or standard controller. It seems that further developments are needed for seamless use of VIVE on a console with JavaScript based WebGL.

If anyone has additional insights to share, especially regarding VIVE examples or resources, please feel free to contribute.

If you're looking to experience VR through a web browser, WebVR.info has all the information you need to get started. By following the instructions on the website, which include using Chromium or Nightly (Firefox), you can begin exploring the world of virtual reality. Keep in mind that these features are not yet available on mainstream browser releases.

For those interested in developing their own WebVR projects, the A-Frame javascript library is a valuable tool that provides access to three.js.

Don't forget to check out the wealth of examples and resources available on the website, as well as join the slack channel for further discussion.
