Establish an HttpOnly cookie using JavaScript

Is it possible to convert a non-HttpOnly cookie into an HttpOnly cookie using JavaScript?

Answer №1

When a cookie is marked as HttpOnly, it means that scripting languages like JavaScript are unable to access it. This is because allowing JavaScript to interact with an HttpOnly cookie would defeat its purpose.

To set an HttpOnly cookie, it should be done on the server side using the relevant server-side language. If JavaScript must be involved in this process, one option is to have it send a request (such as an AJAX request) with specific parameters that trigger the creation of an HttpOnly cookie on the server side. However, this approach still leaves room for vulnerabilities, such as cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks, which could allow hackers to manipulate the cookie and access it via JavaScript, rendering the HttpOnly attribute ineffective.
