Error arises on Github when submitting a pull request due to a conflicted package

When facing conflicts in the package.json file while submitting a pull request, what is the best approach to resolve them?

I usually attempt using git pull origin, but it tends to generate numerous merge commits.

Answer №1

Give this a shot

  1. Make sure the master branch is up to date with the latest changes:
git checkout master
git pull
  1. Merge your feature branch into the master branch:
git merge mybranch

You may encounter a message like this:

Auto-merging package-lock.json
CONFLICT (content): Merge conflict in package-lock.json
Auto-merging package.json
CONFLICT (content): Merge conflict in package.json
Automatic merge failed; fix conflicts and then commit the result.
  1. Open your code editor (e.g. VSCode) and: Resolve conflicts in package.json carefully (if any) Leave conflicts unresolved in package-lock.json
  2. Update packages to regenerate package-lock.json:
npm install
  1. Test your application to ensure resolution of conflicts in package.json.
  2. If the app starts successfully without missing dependencies, add all changes and complete the merge:
git add --update
git commit
  1. If everything looks good, push to GitHub:
git push
